Most SEO advice for small businesses is either wildly outdated or written for enterprise teams with six-figure budgets. This isn't either. This is the four-section playbook we actually run for our small-business clients in Essex.
1. Get your Google Business Profile right
For any local SME, this is the single highest-ROI thing you can do. Properly filled out, verified, with categories that match what people search for, with regular posts, and with a deliberate review-generation strategy.
Most small businesses we audit have a half-filled GBP and three reviews. Fix that and you'll see local-pack movement inside 6–10 weeks.
2. Build a site that targets one thing per page
One page per primary keyword. Don't try to rank one page for "plumber Essex" and "boiler service Essex" — split them into two pages. Each with its own H1, its own focus, its own internal links.
For service businesses, build a "/services/" hub and then individual service pages. For local businesses serving multiple towns, add location pages — but only for towns where you actually have demand.
3. Write content that proves expertise
Google rewards sites that demonstrate expertise. The way you do that is by publishing content that answers the questions your customers actually ask — pricing, process, comparisons, FAQs.
You don't need 100 blog posts. You need 10–15 deeply useful pieces that actually answer the question.
4. Earn links you can defend in 2030
Local press, trade body membership, supplier and customer mentions, digital PR where it makes sense. Don't buy links. Don't use PBNs. Don't do anything you wouldn't happily explain to Google.
What it costs
For a small UK business, a sensible SEO retainer is £495–£995/month. Below £400/month you're mostly getting reporting. Above £1,500/month you're into competitive markets that need a different approach.
How long it takes
Local-pack movement: 6–10 weeks. Organic traffic shifts: 4–6 months. Compound results: 12 months. Anyone promising faster is selling you something dangerous.
